How I Cherish My Moments of Uncertainty

August 19th, 2009 § 0

It’s been several times this summer that I got out of work and just had an urge to go out and ride my bike, for as long as I felt like, with no plan of where I was going. Yet again tonight I got that urge. After 6 hours of staring a screen trying to get one small piece of functionality working for the virtual museum project I’m working on, I was ready to do anything other than sit at a computer more.

Went back to my apartment for a minute, ate half the banana I had in fridge, tossed a few things into my backpack and then took off. I made my way down to the waterfront, because I had promised myself I would ride north on the Burlington Bikeway before summer ended. I’d ridden to the end of it the bikeway to the south, and I’d had a burning desire to the end of the trail to the north.

Because I’m a nerd and I like to see exactly where I went, you can click this link to see the exact route I rode today.

Yup… really didn’t plan on riding 20 miles. I got to the northern head of the Burlington Bikeway. It was still light out, and suddenly that wasn’t good enough for me. I saw a sign for the Champlain Bikeway. Obviously I had no idea where I was at this point, but hey, it was another bikeway! I kept riding. My legs were feeling great today and I was pedaling steady in 5th gear. In the very back of my mind I was thinking that it was getting too dark for me to keep riding, buttttttttttt I kept riding.

At this point I was on Colchester Point Road. And hey, Colchester is right up the road from Winooski, and I was pretty positive I was heading south again, so it had to come out eventually. Well, after riding on Colchester Point Road for 15 minutes or so, I saw water off to my left. Bad. The lake should have been on my right. It was at this point I turned around. Unfortunately, too, because had I know the area better I would have realized that I was on a peninsula, and it probably would have been quicker to just stay on the road I was on and just get back to Route 7 and go south back to Winooski.

But that’s not what happened. So instead, I rode for about an hour backtracking on the Burlington Bikeway. In near complete darkness. The night ended quite well though. I finally got back to North Beach and hopped the railing down on the beach walkway and rode out the main entrance up past BHS, and then back into the north end on North Ave. Stopped at a gas station and sat outside to enjoy an Arizona. And then as I was riding up North Street, I saw China Express, and… well… I hadn’t eat yet, so I stopped and got general tso’s tofu with mushrooms and brocoli.

Long winded stories aside, what got me thinking tonight was the fact that times like the one I experienced tonight, moments of complete uncertainty and a bit of concern (see: me riding down a pitch-black path in the middle of the woods with no bike light for an hour), are ones that I end up cherishing and reliving. Experiences that make us uncomfortable are healthier than we realize, and especially feelings of being lost or disoriented are so rewarding when you eventually find your way out of that experience. Perhaps I’m just rambling. It’s almost 1am now and my body is, needless to say, pretty beat.

Farewell until next time, internet users.

jQuery and ZOMBIELAND!!

August 8th, 2009 § 0

The past 4 days of my vacation I’ve been working on a new site for my friend Dan — wait — Yes, I know the irony of this first sentence, but working on a site does not feel like work to me, and for me a “vacation” does not mean much more than that I’m either home or at my Vermont house. Continuing…

The past 4 days of my vacation I’ve been working on a new site for my friend Dan. In my search to find a user friendly image gallery to use, well… actually I really couldn’t find a good one that did what we wanted that also integrated well with Wordpress. So I set out to integrate a really nice jQuery gallery, Galleria, as much as I could with Wordpress. Twelve hours later I’ve got it mostly functioning. It pulls the list of images from a wordpress page, editable within the admin backend. I’ve also got it supporting multiple galleries via AJAX page loads to call new galleries. If I have time it might even be worth turning into a plugin, but it’s doubtful that I’ll have extra time :P

This is project is the first time I’ve put some serious use to jQuery and I must say I’m rather impressed with it. I’ve seen the name of it floating around a lot lately, and for good reason. It makes AJAX calls a breeze, has a slew of built in effects and selector functionality. I know I sound like a noob saying this after having been a web dev for nearly 6 years now, but hey, first time for everything right?

Next up: WATCH THIS TRAILER! Not exactly fine cinema by any account, but who doesn’t love a good comedy featuring zombies and tons of gore?

I’m Vegan – A Documentary

July 29th, 2009 § 1

I just found some links to share regarding the documentary that my good friend Spencer Campo recently helped shoot. From the website:

I’m Vegan is a series of short documentary profiles that will feature vegans from all walks of life. The project is being produced to address preconceptions about vegans and veganism. The profiles–or “vignettes”–will be distributed for free over the web so that people can share the videos with family, friends, and visitors to their own sites.

Please go read more about it by following this link or by clicking the sweet logo below that you can also grab from the website! There’s also another blog post I found that you can read here.

Getting an Alesis PhotonX25 to Work with Windows 7 64-bit

July 29th, 2009 § 2

My satisfaction level so far with the Windows 7 RC1 build is loads higher than I was even hoping for. This time around, Microsoft isn’t lying when they claim they’ve created the best Windows ever. It is, and by a long shot.

My one complaint to date: plugging in my PhotonX25 yielded no response from the computer whatsoever. Disappointing? Well, as my primary MIDI controller for use within Live, my Alesis is pretty crucial to my music production work flow. So yes, it was a big issue for me. I never used Vista, so I had no clue whether this was a Vista issue as well, or just Windows 7.

Music Scene Nostalgia

July 27th, 2009 § 0

I’ll admit, most of what you listen to on this page is mediocre at best, save for a few. But that remark is made retrospectively and out of context. The music scene you grow up in is the music scene you fall in love with and that influences you for the rest of your life. Tonight has somehow turned into a night to go through myspace and find all the bands that were big in the Willimantic, CT scene when I was in high school. Some real good memories. Listen if you want, but unless you were in it it won’t be good for much more than a laugh ;)

Not surprisingly, the overarching genres represented here are largely still my primary music groups, and that’s electronic and hardcore, though I have to admit that I listen to a LOT of pop punk. I guess there’s really no further analysis to do, it’s just a funny thing to look back on, and definitely a good outlet for nostalgia. I saw all those bands a minimum of three or four times throughout high school and growing up together through high school with a lot of friends who listened to the same bands and went to the same shows as me… well, that’s not something I’ll soon forget.

While I’m at it, I’ll mention that if you watch any video, you should watch the one at the very bottom, which is of Benefit Friends. There’s an earlier video of Benefit Friends from around 2006, which would have been my senior year of high school. The video at the end of the post is Schuyler now, I think the music video was released early 2009. Pretty big difference for sure, but I’m glad he’s still around and making music, even if he’s out in L.A. now.

If anybody reads this that was/is in any of these bands, thanks for the good memories, and leave a comment or somethin ;)

Lazy Summer Update

July 13th, 2009 § 1

Here I am, lounging on my couch at home in CT where I’ve been since Friday. Essentially an unplanned visit, I’m down here because of the wonderful new policies of credit card companies making it so that you can’t ship things to addresses not listed on your credit card. I had all of my parts for my new computer shipped here, and thus here I sit.

GIV, Two Days Remain

June 26th, 2009 § 0

Let’s recap my past 24 hours. Thursday, yesterday now, was a packed day as far as classes go for the students. Three classes plus a free session, resulting in basically 6.5 hours of learning. Following that we all loaded the buses yet again (we’ve been going a LOT of places this week!) and headed up to North Beach. It turned out to be a gorgeous night despite predictions of rain. Immediately upon arrival I played about 45 minutes of soccer, followed by food. After food was about an hour straight of frisbee, which was great. Andddd after that was swimming and playing chicken for another hour and a half or so.

Perhaps I had forgotten how draining GIV can be. Monday night now, end of day three with 5 more to go. Really exhausted already, but honestly could live doing this all summer.

Toooooo Fast

June 19th, 2009 § 0

Looking through my meticulously organized Google Calendar I’m noticing that almost every single weekend of my entire summer through August is almost already planned out.

DO. NOT. LIKE.

Granted, every one of those weekends is going to be amazing, but it seems like this time of semi-solitude in my love Burlington is already disappearing. I think I just fully realized today how difficult it is going to be for me to leave this place come next June. Assuming I get a job in Montreal, which at this point seems very ideal, I still don’t feel like I’ll be as satisfied there as I am here. Everything about Vermont and Burlington in particular illustrates my demeanor and my wishes for fulfilling my sense of community and do-gooding. Progressive government, health-conscious citizens, environmentally aware and friendly. City Market. Need I say more?

Actually, I will say more, because here’s another “Ten Seconds to End My Day”. For those interested, there is now a Vimeo group you can join and participate in.

Explore MOAR!!

June 16th, 2009 § 0

The past couple of days have fully opened my eyes to how we can be so close to something beautiful beyond words and not even know it or not recognize it to its full breadth. I’ll admit, my first lakeside bike ride that I wrote about last night got me hooked. I’m now a user of the Burlington Bike Path with no plans for recovery. Naturally I headed out again to catch yet another excellent sunset on the mountains across the lake. Tonight I made sure I had my camera and memory card with me (hah…) so I could try to even capture a tiny bit of the magesty.

I did get a few decent shots, but more importantly I got some video. You can watch it below, but don’t expect it to be anything incredible. I’m starting a series for the summer called 10 Seconds to End My Day. Truthfully the point of doing it isn’t necessarily to show anything incredible. Everybody finds pleasure in different things and the 10 seconds I choose to put out there when the day comes to an end might be completelyyy different than somebody else. For all 2 or 3 of you that read this blog, I’d invite you to start this as well. Put your videos up on YouTube or Vimeo and tag the video with “10stemd”.
